Greetings from Mission Control.  Our adventure to Mars is about to commence.  This curriculum is provided and supported by the AFRL La Luz Academy on Kirtland AFB.   It is my privilege to be teaching the Mission to Mars class for the fourth time.  In addition to experiencing a unit study of Mars, we will learn some important life-skills.

The Mars Mission is a STEM initiative which incorporates multiple learning styles to get students excited about Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.  There are Eight Base Operations which lead up to an amazing, culminating event called Link Up Day. I do have a specific breakdown of the standards taught in this curriculum if you would like a copy.  I’m glad your student will be joining us for components of the program:

  • Facts about Mars- 32 facts to learn
  • Life Support System-prototype development based on Facts
  • Lunch- balanced meals and packing your own
  • Saga- a cheer/song written and performed to tell the story of our adventure
  • Patch- graphic display of individual teams
  • Uniform- matching clothing worn by team
  • Telecommunications- decoding, plotting locations on a map, and communicating with other teams
  • Habitat- large plastic pieces which are taped together on Link Up Day to make large habitats

In our classroom, we will be emphasizing the following life-skills which homeschoolers often lack mastery in:
  • Team work- students will work with the same 5-6 others every week.
  • Peacemaking- Biblical ideas from The Young Peacemaker curriculum will guide our conflict management and problem solving
  • Problem solving- multiple encounters with opportunities to follow directions
  • Personal accountability- adults will not undo or redo components, building individual responsibility
