Do you want to develop or encourage your child’s interest in science, engineering, construction, or robotics?
In this class, middle-school aged students will explore the basics of system engineering and robotics by learning to assemble and program small, wheeled robots (Boe-Bots) to run through obstacle courses. The kids will form teams of 3-5 and each team will receive their own Boe-Bot to build and command. Some of the concepts we will cover include: construction and alteration of a robot, electronic circuits, the history of computers, BASIC programming, and problem solving.
The curriculum we are using is designed and sponsored by the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) La Luz Academy. Student teams will complete and submit 6 assignments and quizzes online to AFRL and receive a grade based on their completeness of work. The top 30 teams in the state will be invited to a Boe-Bot Expo at Kirtland AFB in April.
Using this project-based framework, my desire is to joyfully increase each student’s knowledge of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) concepts while helping them develop their interpersonal and teamwork skills.
Since this class focuses heavily on team-based problem solving combined with on-site engineering and computer work, homework should be minimal.
Alison Martin has been homeschooling her five children for 8 years. She has Bachelors and Masters Degrees from Stanford University and her high school robotics team attended the U.S. First National Robotics competition in Florida. She has led a team of 5th grade girls through the First Lego League robotics challenge and received training from AFRL in the use of Boe-Bots in education. Alison works part time as a helicopter flight instructor teaching teenagers and adults the in-depth academic concepts and mechanics of aviation with the purpose of growing safe pilots.
