Does your child love science? Are they curious about the natural world and eager to learn more?
The purpose of this class is to teach students how to study the natural world scientifically. It will involve both nature study and the collection of environmental data using scientific protocols. Not only are your kids learning about science and the natural world around them, but they get to BE SCIENTISTS! My ultimate goal for your child is that they develop a connection and appreciation for the local ecosystem, which is accomplished by knowing the plants and animals right outside their front door.
Nature study includes: keeping a detailed field journal of various plants and animals, identifying those plants and animals, and doing various STEM-related activities that allow us to know more about the natural world. We’ll also be learning about phenology and seeing how plants and subsequent animal populations change from one season to the next.
This course will be held outside for every class meeting (with the exception of really bad weather), so students should come prepared! Everything they’ll need will be listed in the syllabus.
If your child was enrolled in Nature Study in the fall, the format will be similar. However, we’ll be learning new things – specifically, what’s happening in our ecosystem in the Spring. This is called phenology – studying nature as seasons change. Returning students will not need to buy new supplies because they can continue to use the same journal.

About the Instructor:
Hi, I’m Dr. Jenny. I’m a biologist and mom of two young children. My research revolves around the human/nature connection and I own a business that helps parents connect their kids to nature using science-based activities (jennylloydstrovas.com). I have almost 15 years of experience teaching science at the college level and during that time I was involved with outreach programs that taught science to school-aged children. I’m excited to teach your children how to study nature scientifically!
