Sandy Cannon
I have been an educator for 31 years, in schools, at home, in co-ops, and at PLANT. I teach many subjects from dance to government to literature. My goal is to help families educate their children. I offer a variety of classes each semester to provide opportunities for students to learn in an environment you cannot quite recreate at home. Students are challenged to think about topics differently than they have before and are encouraged to offer their own point of view. |

How the World Works: This High School course dives into the series called Uncle Eric’s Model of How the World Works by Richard J. Maybury. We explore foundational information on politics, economics, law, and history. Parent & Student testimonial: "I am really happy I attended this class. It encouraged me to start reading non-fiction and sparked my interest in learning more. I now own my own business, with a growing interest in finance and continuous learning. I am grateful for this class because it introduced me to the value of learning from books. If I hadn’t attended, I probably would have never gotten into learning from books or built the confidence to keep learning, even when it gets hard. Additionally, my understanding of world history has grown significantly, thanks to this class. This experience has been very enriching, and I’m thankful for the knowledge I gained." Caravans: Working within groups called caravans, student adventurers join a race to supply artifacts for the museum of “Big Buck” Billionolla. Student Caravans travel the world, from city to city and from country to country, seeking treasures for which they earn rewards paid in gold pieces. Constitution: Students will learn the basic structure of the U.S. Constitution, how it came to be, and how its brilliant design has made the U.S. a beacon of hope among the nations. Parent & student testimonials: “I loved Sandy Cannons teaching style, my kids really enjoyed her class and learned lots about government and also some great history. She always make’s information easy to understand and fun! I really appreciated this class and would definitely recommend it to others!” “I loved how Mrs. Sandy laughs with us and always made class super fun! I learned allot about government and the constitution. I really liked how she taught us the information, but gave us all the answers to the test to memorize in advance. Thanks so much Mrs. Sandy!” Math Quest: Students work in groups using six different strategies to solve problems as they make their way through an imaginary land. Parent & student testimonials: “What an intriguing class! From start to finish Math Quest challenged my student's math skills and really got him thinking outside the box. This course gave him new skills to problem solve and was really fun all along the way!” “I really liked Math Quest! Mrs. Cannon is a really great teacher. She made it so fun, and she gave us "gold" at the end of our quest!” Exploring Classics: Two books inspire this class offering: A Thomas Jefferson Education for the Twenty-First Century by Oliver Van DeMille and Evaluating Books: What Would Thomas Jefferson Think About This? by Richard J. Maybury. We will be reading classics, discussing them, and writing about them. Among book options will be classics such as: David Copperfield, Jane Eyre, Washington’s Farewell Address, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, Great Expectations, Of Courage Undaunted, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass: An American Slave, The Declaration of Independence. Say It With Class: Each class will provide multiple opportunities for students to practice their speaking skills and offer feedback to peers.
