This year-long course will utilize the Notgrass Exploring Economics curriculum and supplemental Economics Literature Package. Students learn Biblical teachings about economics from the Old and New Testaments and a history of the U.S. economy. The curriculum emphasizes the contrast between command economies and free markets. Exploring Economics helps students understand both microeconomics and macroeconomics. The course explains economic terms from supply and demand to GDP and the Consumer Price Index, giving students tools to understand what they hear in the news and to make wise economic decisions. In addition to one -semester of high school economics the course also includes one-semester of high school literature. Students will read a significant number of original source documents and essays about economics. Students will also read two novels, one book about the global economy and one autobiography. Students will read literary analysis of the books and discuss them in writing. Students will be expected to complete a project every other week - either a 300 -500 word essay (this is equivalent to one-page typed) or other creative project related to the study of economics.
Note on Testing: I will not be using class time for administering tests or quizzes. Students will be evaluated on the bi-weekly projects, presentations, class discussion and participation. If, you, the parent, wish to test your student either for a record of their performance, for testing practice, or as an alternative form of evaluation, you have that option. Notgrass produces a Student Review packet that includes daily review questions, consumable unit quizzes and exams. I will indicate on the syllabus when these quizzes and exams should be administered at home. I will grade them for third-party accountability if you like or you may use the answer key to grade them yourself. If you would like your student to be tested you should choose the testing option at checkout which will include the additional $10 Student Review Packet. Mona Koerner has 20 years experience as a political economist and policy analyst. She holds a PhD in Public Policy/Political Economy from the University of Texas at Austin, MBA from the University of New Mexico and a BA in Political Science with a minor in Economics from the University of New Mexico. Over the course of her career she has worked on a number of different types of public finance topics including Federal highway construction, national laboratory asset management, school district capital financing, affordable housing finance, homeless prevention and amelioration, housing counseling and financial literacy, economic development and job training. She has taught classes in Public Financial Management at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of New Mexico.
