Learning to write can be a blast. It’s true!
This course is designed to be a bridge to high school level writing. Using IEW’s Advanced US History Writing Lessons, students will learn proper structure for academic writing, including how to write from sources without plagiarizing. The IEW text is our foundation, but students will also explore genres of creative writing and literature study.
Form and style are essential building blocks to strong written communication, whether in the academic setting or elsewhere. IEW materials are superior at training students in structured writing techniques. Aside from this great curriculum, this writing and literature class is high-energy—Involving games, collaborative thinking activities, intense discussions, and candy (yes, candy—it works!) This class is about learning to think clearly so that thoughts can be written down clearly. Students are expected to complete an average of 4-5 hours of homework per week. All writing is graded and students are given an opportunity for revision.
The IEW text and other resources used in class will always support a Biblical Worldview. Discussions are an integral part of literature study and students are encouraged to consider elements of the stories we read from a foundation of Biblical truth.
Jackie de Laveaga is a licensed teacher of Language Arts with a B.A. in English and Education and a M.Ed. degree. She has been teaching writing and literature for over 25 years to students in grades K-College. She began teaching courses to home educated students using IEW materials over fifteen years ago and has watched even the most reluctant writers develop ease in the art of writing. Jackie has homeschooled her own five children (and is still at it) for over twenty years. She also teaches part-time for an online classical academy.
